Now imagine making a movie during quarantine. You, the two friends whose house you’ve been sheltering in, plus the two other pals in your pod. You’ve got an iPhone and some microphones and a case of LaCroix and a script. That’s it. Such was the making of Mother!!, a short film I wrote and codirected with Morgan Spector (The Plot Against America) as part of Maven Pictures’ With/In anthology, which—somehow, against all odds—is debuting on Sunday at the Tribeca Film Festival. It’s a movie about sourdough. And existential dread. Perhaps I should say existential bread.
A confession: As a contributing editor of Vogue, I’m fluent in the art of asking people about their work, but when it comes to interviewing myself, as it were, my mind goes blank. So when it was suggested I write a little something about Mother!! and the experience of making it, I panicked. Where to start? On March 12 of last year, when New York City mayor Bill de Blasio declared a state of emergency and Morgan and his wife, Rebecca Hall—who are like family to me—more or less commanded I pack a suitcase and hop on the next train out of town? Or when Morgan, Rebecca, and I began batting around ideas? Do I get into the weeds, explaining that cinematographer Zach Kuperstein spent umpteen hours on Zoom teaching Morgan and me how to use the fancy lenses we’d been sent? Do I mention that I have a whole second career as a screenwriter or how terrified I was about having to act in the film?
Close your eyes and picture a movie set. A small army of pros dash to and fro, mounting lighting rigs, dressing the set, supplying the catering table, fixing actors’ faces and hair. Sound recordists keep one ear on the sky, scanning for the rumble of passing planes; producers keep one eye on the clock, as the director asks for another take or—setting the whole crew in frantic motion—adds another camera angle to the scene.
