A quick aside about Podcast Man: One of the big victories in making Mother!! was getting the actor Stephen Root (Barry, Office Space) on board to voice that part. I mean, it’s one thing to make a movie with your friends who happen to be two of the best actors of their generation, but convincing this total stranger whose work I adore to say yes to the project made it feel much more substantial and real. Two of the more apparent levels on which the film is working are quarantine satire and domestic commentary. Would you disagree or add others?

It’s such a challenge to portray boredom or malaise without mimicking it onscreen, and you did it. Did you feel like this was something you had to grapple with as you were making this? Or perhaps this was simply solved by the short-film format? Can you talk about who/what the titular mother is? Is it a singular object, a feminine force, something to be feared?

Quarantine satire for sure. I mean, on one level, the film is an extended joke about how obsessed a certain locked-down demographic was with baking sourdough bread. I knew enough about the process to key in on the fact that the mother—the sourdough starter—needs constant care and feeding, which makes it a particularly good locus for obsession. The script kind of spun up from that. But whenever I write—whether for Vogue or in my screenwriting—I’m always looking for the thing behind the thing, if you know what I mean. In this case, the thing behind seemed to me to be this anxiety, in the early days of the pandemic when we really had no idea how long it would last, that COVID was ending the world as we’d known it—like, it was hard to find toilet paper, right?—and that we’d all have to become new people in a new world. That anxiety made its way into the character of Podcast Man, the apocalyptic voice in Morgan’s ear.
